From Lab to Market: How Technology Transfer Works

September 28, 2026  ·  By nsuifdev

Technology transfer is the process of moving research out of the university and into use. The process is not always visible, but it follows a consistent path.

1. Discovery

A faculty member, student, or research team develops something new: a method, a device, software, or a material.

2. Disclosure

The inventor reports the discovery to the foundation through an invention disclosure. This starts the evaluation process and protects the inventor’s place in line.

3. Evaluation

The foundation reviews the invention for patentability, market potential, and fit with potential partners.

4. Protection

If the invention is promising, the foundation may file for a patent or other protection. This step makes the technology licensable.

5. Marketing and licensing

The foundation identifies companies that could develop the technology and negotiates a license. Terms often include upfront fees, royalties, or equity.

6. Commercialization

The licensee develops the product. In some cases, the inventors start their own company to do it.

7. Reinvestment

Revenue from licensing typically returns to the inventors, their departments, and the research enterprise, funding the next round of discovery.

For NSU researchers

If you have a discovery you think could have value outside the lab, contact us before publishing or presenting it publicly. Early disclosure preserves options.
